EVA Air Baggage Policy: Carry-On, Checked Allowance & Fees Explained

EVA Air Baggage Policy

EVA Air offers one of the more generous baggage allowances among Star Alliance carriers, but its rules shift depending on your cabin class, route, and fare type. Whether you’re flying Economy from Taipei or Business Class across the Pacific, understanding the EVA Air baggage policy before you pack saves you both money and stress at the airport. This guide breaks down everything: carry-on limits, checked baggage allowances, excess fees, and the special rules that trip travelers up.

EVA Air Carry-On Baggage Allowance

EVA Air is stricter than many U.S. carriers when it comes to cabin baggage, and it’s known to weigh hand luggage at check-in and again at the gate.

Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers are permitted to carry one piece weighing 7kg (15lbs), with maximum dimensions of 23 × 36 × 56cm (9 × 14 × 22in) or a total of 115cm (45in). Royal Laurel, Premium Laurel, and Business Class passengers are allowed two pieces of hand-carry baggage, each not exceeding 7kg (15lbs).

Personal Item

In addition to the main carry-on, every passenger regardless of class may bring one personal item such as a laptop bag, purse, small backpack, or camera case, with approximate dimensions of 40 × 30 × 10cm. Keep in mind that a bulky or overstuffed laptop bag can be reclassified as your main carry-on at check-in.

What Happens If Your Carry-On Is Too Big?

During check-in, if your carry-on baggage exceeds the limit, EVA Air will ask you to check it. Before boarding, carry-on baggage is rechecked, and if it exceeds the limit it will be checked at the boarding gate. If this pushes you over your checked allowance, extra fees apply.

EVA Air Checked Baggage Allowance

Since June 23, 2022, EVA Air applies the piece concept across its entire network, replacing the old weight-based system used on Asia, Europe, and Oceania routes. This change made EVA Air the first Taiwanese airline to apply piece-concept baggage rules throughout its network and aligned its policy with other Star Alliance members.

Allowance by Cabin Class

Under the piece concept, your free checked baggage allowance depends on your booking class:

Cabin ClassPiecesMax Weight Per Piece
Royal Laurel / Premium Laurel / Business232kg (70lbs)
Premium Economy223kg (50lbs)
Economy (Standard)223kg (50lbs)
Economy Discount Fare123kg (50lbs)

Passengers booked in Royal Laurel, Premium Laurel, or Business Class are allowed two pieces weighing up to 32kg (70lbs) each, while Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers can check two pieces weighing up to 23kg (50lbs) each. The Discount Fare Booking Class is allowed only one piece up to 23kg.

Size Limits for Checked Bags

The sum of the three dimensions of each checked piece generally may not exceed 158cm (62 inches) for standard fares. Bags exceeding this are treated as oversized and incur additional charges.

EVA Air Excess Baggage Fees

If you carry more than your free allowance, EVA Air charges excess baggage fees. The excess baggage fee chart is divided into Taiwan and five zones, and charges are calculated per piece on a zone basis. Fees depend on where you’re flying from and to.

A few money-saving facts:

  • Prepay online to save. Purchase extra allowance through “Manage Your Trip” on the EVA Air website at least four hours before departure for a discount versus airport rates.
  • Overweight is charged separately. If a single piece is overweight or oversized, you pay an additional fee on top of the excess piece charge.

Overweight and Oversized Rules

Baggage over 32kg (70lbs) must be repacked before it can be accepted as checked baggage, to prevent injury to baggage handlers. The weight limit restriction refers to a single item and does not affect your overall baggage allowance or excess fee. If you need to carry more than 10 pieces of checked baggage, or an item that cannot be repacked weighing between 32kg and 45kg, you must contact EVA Air Reservations 48 hours before departure.

Traveling With Infants

In addition to the free checked allowance, each infant or child may bring a fully collapsible stroller, infant carrying basket, or car seat, which can be checked as baggage or accepted as a carry-on subject to cabin space. If you check the stroller, remove all accessories first to avoid loss. An infant without a seat receives one checked-bag allowance based on the accompanying adult’s class, while an infant with a seat gets the standard adult allowance.

Sports Equipment and Special Items

Sports equipment such as golf clubs, surfboards, and bikes generally counts toward your standard free piece allowance. If an item exceeds your piece count it’s charged as excess, and if it’s longer than 158cm it may attract oversize fees, though some items like golf bags have route-dependent waivers. Contact EVA Air reservations 48 hours ahead for special items.

Prohibited and Restricted Items

Prohibited items in EVA Air checked baggage include lithium batteries over 100Wh, flammable liquids, explosives, compressed gases, and valuables such as jewelry, electronics, cash, and important documents — these should go in your cabin bag or stay home. Rideable smart suitcases weighing over 7kg or exceeding the carry-on size limit must be checked, and all such suitcases must comply with lithium battery regulations.

Frequent Flyer and Star Alliance Benefits

Infinity MileageLands Diamond, Gold, and Silver cardholders, as well as Star Alliance Gold members, receive one extra piece, with the weight based on booking class: 32kg for Business cabins and 23kg for Premium Economy and Economy. Note that extra allowance applies only to Star Alliance sectors — non-Star Alliance connecting flights may still charge excess fees.

Smart Packing Tips for EVA Air Travelers

Weigh your carry-on at home, since EVA Air enforces the 7kg cabin limit more rigorously than most airlines. Prepay any anticipated excess baggage online for the discount. Distribute weight evenly across two pieces rather than overloading one bag past 23kg or 32kg, and always check your e-ticket, which displays your specific allowance based on your fare.
